Learning to Drive

Once you've decided that you want the freedom that driving can give you, you'll want to know a little about the process and what's involved.

Driving to a good and safe standard isn't easy. It requires hard work, commitment and effort, but if you can bring those qualities to your lessons, I can help you to become a safe confident driver in as short a period as possible.

In order to obtain your full driving licence, you need to take and pass two tests. Firstly the theory test which is made up of two parts, a multiple choice test and a Hazard Perception test which is designed to improve and test your anticipation skills. I would recommend that you start to study for the theory test as you begin your lessons or even before that if possible.

Then there is the practical driving test. I'm sure you've heard plenty of stories from friends who've taken their test but I can assure you that as long as you prepare well, with my help, the test is nothing to fear. Having said that, you wouldn't be normal if you didn't get a few butterflies! Being prepared is the key to a successful test outcome.

People often ask how many lessons they will need to pass their test and the honest answer is that I don't know! It's such an individual thing and I have had pupils pass with 18 lessons and some with 50 or more. As an average, I would say somewhere in the region of 30 hours is realistic, especially if you are able to practice privately as well.

The Driving Instructor

My name is Simon Chinn and I'm a fully qualified Driving Standards Agency approved Driving Instructor.

I've been doing this now since November 2004 and I still really enjoy my job which I hope comes across in my lessons. Although driving is a serious business, I want you to be looking forward to your lessons and enjoying them. Learning is so much easier if you're having fun!!

I know how much hard work goes into learning to drive and I still get a great buzz from seeing my pupils pass their test.

I pride myself on my patience, reliability and ability to keep calm in all situations.

The Learner Car

I currently use a black Citroen C2 1.4sx as my tuition vehicle. Keep an eye out for it as I've probably driven past you recently!!

It's a great little car. It looks good, is extremely comfortable and drives very well too.

As you'd expect it's fitted with air conditioning and dual controls (just in case you need a little help!).

Cost of Driving Lessons

At the moment my prices are as follows:

Hourly Lesson Rate£ 23.00
90 Minute Lesson£ 34.00
Two hour Lesson£ 44.00
Motorway Lesson£ 26.00 per hour
Pass Plus£160.00

I also offer a discount if you pre-pay for a block of ten hours. You can get this for £220, which works out at just £22 per hour. Compare this to the prices charged by the larger schools and see what great value it is.
